My response to the Danish cartoons

This was in response to a question put to me by a friend. Be advised I wrote this at work and haven't yet revised it. Nor do I intend to really.

These guys say it quite well Uzer, Avari/Nameh and Avari Again

Here's her question and my response below that.

Hey Mar,

I'm forwarding this email to you, because quite frankly I looked at the cartoons and while some of them are pretty clear in meaning, I don't understand some of them. I wanted to ask your opinion as to whether you consider this to be offensive and should be suppressed, or offensive but should be allowed as part of free speech, or none of the above and something else.

Hope you don't mind? Maybe you could also explain what some of the more obscure ones mean (I'm thinking the first three)? Like I get they're meant to be satirical but I don't really understand what the meaning is.

Love

My Response:

You've asked me a question that requires some serious intellectual discourse, its not only that i dont have time for this I also dont have the intellec to do so

Having said that, I'll quote this from the article you sent me:

" The Iranian embassy in Oslo said that freedom of expression cannot justify publishing the cartoons. However, Finn Jarle Sæle, the editor of the Norwegian Christian newspaper Norge I DAG, announced that his paper is also considering publishing the cartoons. He called upon other Norwegian editors to do the same. Sæle says that so far many of them have only written editorials supporting freedom of expression but have not dared to publish the cartoons themselves.

Asked if wider publication will not lead to unnecessary confrontations between Christians and Muslims Sæle said the intention was not to provoke just for the sake of provoking, but rather to confront radical Islam in Norway. Perhaps it is necessary to provoke in order to do that, he said. Sæle wants the Norwegian imams to publicly oppose the death threats that have been sent to Magazinet’s editor Vebjørn Selbekk. According to Sæle these threats are not just directed against Magazinet. They affect the entire Norwegian media, not just one editor who dared to stand up for freedom of expression

"

I dont know what the first cartoon means myself. I just know that a random Danish journo can't think himself so worthy that he puts a face to the Prophet, the man most respected  and admired for his life's work, not just in this life but also in the here after.

The second one is definitely offensive -- if thats supposed the be the Prophet, then why's he got horns coming out of his head? And why's he depicted with a dumbfounded expressio on his face.

The 3rd is using the universally accepted symbol of Islam, superimposing (allegedly) the Prophets face on it -- thereby blinding him in one eye with the star. There are many conotations you can interpret from that kind of symbolism.

The rest are self explanatory and disrespectful.

The disrespect comes not only from depicting the prophet in drawing, by giving him a face and physical characteristics that no living person can vouch for (us muslims consider this to be blasphemous) but its also depicting the prophet in disgraceful and disrespectful ways. THAT's what the fuss is about.

Read the part of the article I highlighted. So even though there are parts of the Norwegian/Danish community who are aware of the "radical" muslim faction of their community, they think it best to confront the issue by provoking them? Yeah sure, that's very responsible. You know what, say what you want about "muslim fundamentalists" and they're slightly better "moderate" counterparts but the facts remain.

These cartoons go well beyond the right to "freedom of speech" because the notion doesn't exist. Its been misused just like every other "democratic" principle. Take the current Anti Terrorism legislation in Australia. If you so much as talk about things the government has deemed unsuitable, you can be labelled a terrorist and your movements monitored. Hell, you dont even have to talk about any contentious issue, if you LOOK a particular way or if your less than "middle eastern looking" neighbour/colleague/jo-blogs down the road decides you look "terrorist-y" they can call in their national anti-terror hotline and have ASIO at your doorstep, prying into your business...watching your every move. I mean, for crying out loud!

So please, if you're going to use any rationale to argue the point, don't use "free speech" coz its crap and we all know it. It is provocation and the way to deal with anger is not to incite it in its worst form. If, that is what the intent was (to highlight and address the issue of "violence" and "fundamental" muslims).

I think a lot of the frustration comes from the fact that this act is seen as an unprovoked assault. Its no secret that muslims take their religion seriously. In the current climate, where the leaders of the world are trying to put together a service pack for "dealing with the temperamental terrorists" we don't need irresponsible and immature publishers printing this kind of crap. And as far as the "they do it to us" argument goes, I'd like to quash that as well. Muslims and muslim countries and muslim media are sensitive to and respectful of other religions, even those not considered to be "people of the book" and a cartoon such as this would never make it to press.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've been looking for the entire collection of cartoons.

Victim: Who? Me?

Its not a new phenomenon, actually its pretty old. Well before Sexual Harassment and Equal Opportunity Laws came into play it wasn't even recognised as a problem. Post the implementation of those laws, in some places it still isn't. Because what the Law states is either accepted or rejected by those its incumbent upon. And that's because you can pass all the laws in the world, but its not going to change a person's mentality.

Working in an office is not new to me. I've been doing it since I was 21 and really, I'm well acquainted with the do's, do-not's, political affiliations, the formation of the demographics, the cronies, the groupies, the losers, what have you. I know how to keep the kitchen clean after use, be present at least one out of 5 social club functions and how to not have elaborate personal conversations on the phone, be it on your mobile or company phone.

Now, here's another thing we ALL know. Touching, of any form is inappropriate. I stress that point. Unless its two women, or two men, and during a friendly conversation there's a tap on the shoulder or hand, or arm, all other forms of touching, unless consensual are INAPPROPRIATE and make the person receiving such treatment feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable.

Take the example of a young female working in a predominantly male enviroment (me).

She's friendly, has forged some good working relationships in her time at this job and is now looking to change jobs. She's asked her supervisor to be her referee, not particularly because of their wonderful working relationship but more so because he's the person who has most closely worked with her and is better able at being quizzed about her strengths/weaknesses/work ethos.

Lets say on a particular day (today) she (me) is standing talking to another colleague.

Her supervisor (jerk) whose reputation suffers undercurrents of inappropriate behaviour, walks by her and pushes her shoulders, using just his fingers. Both hands. Just fingers.

DO YOU KNOW HOW FUCKING CREEPY THAT IS!

She (me) being the person she is, turns immediately to tell him "Can you never do that again?"

To which his idiotic reply is "Never never?"

Like you can lighten the situation.

And she responds "No. Never" Firm and fierce, ready to rip him to shreds.

<insert routine chatter, where she continues the bitching to the colleague she was talking to while all this happened. thankfully her colleague conceded to being glad that he's a male, specifically due to situations such as the one that just prespired>

If anything, said "touching" should become a punishable offence where the fingers (or part of body used to touch with) should be broken off, brutally. Not because I'm a violent person but because certain things invoke a violence in me that scares even myself. How dare someone feel like they can casually put their hands on her? Is there no respect, if only for PERSONAL SPACE! Why a person would be so inclined to violate their working relationship and that general space, is not a question I'm pondering right now. Because we're not friends here, we're colleagues. She's not on friendly terms with anyone such that they feel the need to reach out and make contact with a part of her... minus the hand shaking on the first day of work. And I say this not just as a muslim woman, who covers up but also as a woman with a low patience for CREEPS.

The other important question she's left to wonder, is this, Do I change the referees on my CV? (No brainer that one!, mainly coz she doesnt think she can continue being professionally superficial with this creep)

The reason this poses a problem is whereas it was ok for her supervisor to know that she's looking for other jobs, it may/may not be ok for her boss to know the same thing. (her boss = manager of business unit)

Wallaho-alam.

I'm not using the term "sexual harrasement" here because of the palava it comes with but hey there it is.Thats what happened.

I know it still happens and its beyond ridiculous, because it sickening to put someone in a situation where they feel control has been stripped off them. So i'm putting the question to those who've seen this happen, experienced it happen. Any instances of routine/sporadic/any kind of inappropriate touching...at the workplace.

Keep in mind that had this happened in a social setting she would not have hesitated to use some choice words in her assault on the perp. Its upsetting because she wasn't able to rip his hands off. A dramatic reaction? Perhaps. Oh well.

I'm saying a prayer to calm me down: La hawla wala quwwata illa billah (There is no power nor strength save in Allah)

I know what its beginning to look like

Ok so I've stumbled across a blog, by Allah's Grace and its helped strengthen my desire to write, and write well. I have since started copying and pasting from this blog. Making it look like I have no thoughts of my own to type out, just plagiarise this guy's work. Truth is... ok well that is the truth. I'm a downright plagiarist. So shoot me

My role at work has recently perked up, I'm writing Crystal reports, which means I have to dust off the cobwebs that have so cosily settled on my SQL know how. This and a number of other worldly pursuits, well, they've not all been worldly, at least one of those is related to my soul and thus my future. Then again, can you talk about your soul in terms of past, present and future? I digress.

I just want to let every one know that I'm not necessarily out of ideas or that I'm now content to read and quote. Allah s.w.t has turned my wasteful net surfing into something useful by leading me to the site of a learned writer. I hope to benefit from this, as much as I can. This will mean that I will find articles through Ibrahim's blog (or a link that I've found on a somewhat related site) that inspire sharing. I will put them up on my blog because like myself, a lot of visitors to this page aren't as widely read as they could be. And to me, putting up journal articles or news stories is an effective way of sharing information with people who will not necessarily click on the link. Then again, what makes me think they will actually read any of it. But, I can try!

Again, this ties into my reasons for starting a blog. To write but also to read.

Oh and to be written about? Well, that was never an aim

Also I've decided i HATE msn's formatting. I HATE IT! Grrrr  I want to be able to show one blog entry on the first page and then the rest on the Blog tab. WHY cant i do this! Pfffffft!
